2023 Season Competitions

Competitions are an integral part of all camera clubs, encouraging new and old members outside of their comfort zones to interpret and produce a unique image. Whether shot on film or digital, printed or projected, the external judge provides a balanced critique that encourages all members with improving their particular photographic journey.

Club Competitions 2023/24:

Competition 1 - Title: Woodland, Trees and Flora
Judge:

Following the talk by Wayne Robertson in November 2022, this competition challenges the members to look for interesting images and or stories within the woodland areas they walk in or visit regularly. Maybe you focus is on trees or just a single tree, or possible wildflowers or fungi on the woodland floor; perhaps you see an image to record in the early morning light where the trees slowly disappear through the mist; or do you prefer the shafts of light that slip gracefully through the branches, highlighting the moss below. Whatever captures your imagination, if it is a woodland image, will be your challenge in this competition.

An empty room, building or street. Maybe it’s a play park with swings and roundabouts but no children to be seen. An egg shell empty and abandoned on a woodland floor. A bleak glen…. You get the picture. The judge will be looking for your interpretation of what an empty space is and how you portray the emptiness of your chosen object or location. Dramatic lighting might be your thing, or maybe you’re telling a story of what or who was once there, whether left empty minutes, months or years gone by.

Whether posed, candid, traditional or environmental (a moment in someone’s working or daily life), your images should convey your subject’s identity, personality or story. Be as creative in your approach as you dare. Will your image be a single frame or a composite image? Colour or monochrome or something in-between, anything goes! Most importantly can you portray your subject in a way that will stand out from the rest?

Simplifying your subject matter and composition within a low or high key environment is the order of the day for this competition. Low key photographs are underlit, featuring dramatic contrast and dark colours. Alternatively, a high-key image is primarily of light tones without dark shadows. Combining one of these techniques with a minimalist approach to your subject should give you plenty of scope to produce an outstanding image to impress the judge.
